Living Gospel

So I have had my thinking challenged in the past few days…

We are starting a new church wide bible study based on “The Hole in Our Gospel” by Richard Stearns, President of World Vision -U.S. The book addresses what does God expect from us? And are we living the “whole” gospel or one with a hole in it. Immediately I am faced with am I doing what makes me feel good or what makes God feel good and that is a telling revelation.

I am the picture of what most would have as a “good Christian”. I live a morally sound life, I do no harm, I go to church almost every Sunday with my family, I support the church with my presence, my gifts, my service and my witness. But do I really?

The Hole in the World

The gospel as told by Jesus and documented in the new testament is pretty clear that we as Christians are supposed to take care of the “least of those” among us and by doing so are serving not only the human but our very Lord that we claim to believe in.  No less than a couple of thousand references throughout the bible tell us to serve the poor, the widows, the sick and the downtrodden.  We as a community of faith do a good job out outreach as a whole church to address the gospel above.

And when we do one of those missions we come away feeling good that we have served those that are less fortunate than us or have just come into bad circumstances.  But is that the “whole” gospel or did we just do that which is not too messy or personal so that we missed the “hole” in the gospel.  For example, I am the lay leader at our church and the primary outreach that is laity is a food bank restocking every winter.  This year we took a leap of faith to double what we did last year.  We had the goal to provide 12,000 non perishable food items to the food bank of another local church.  It was a  stretch and was well beyond what other churches were able to do, not because we are a big church because we are not.  Instead it was because we identified and focused on a need and were faithful to our calling to live the gospel and we made that goal.  It was very fulfilling to deliver that food and see the faces and hear the voices of thanks from those that run the food bank.  We did our job, we helped those of lesser means.

That was February…not a one of us has been back since.  I am guilty as anyone.  So am I living the gospel?  Occasionally.  What is faith without deeds.  I know I can not earn salvation, that is given through belief and the grace of Jesus but when we pray that “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” doesn’t that mean we have to focus on doing what the bible says over and over about those of us that have plenty should give to those that don’t?  This bothers me and continues to nag at me almost to the point of not being able to keep it off my mind.

This study brings much attention to the poverty of other parts of the world outside the United States.  I must admit that I have been guilty to turning a deaf ear at times for pleas to help with African missions or help in Haiti or any other developing country but given what the gospel is saying to us, it appears as if I am missing the boat on being a disciple of Jesus Christ if I can’t soften my heart to these issues.  It is absolutely frightening at the amount of death that is happening around the world by causes like hunger, clean water and disease that we have the knowledge to prevent.  We can change the world through the power of our Savior if we have the guts to do His will in our lives and live the whole gospel as we have been taught.

Heed God’s Signals

Ever wonder if God is really leading your life and if you are living according to His rules? This is something that I probably think about at least once a day. I often wonder if I am doing what I am supposed to be doing and if it is enough to save me from eternal damnation. Even though I know that I cannot earn salvation it was the way I was raised I guess. Do the right thing not the wrong. But who is it that defines right and wrong?

I read Max Lucado quite a bit and he wrote of some of God’s time tested truths that we should pay attention to or else take our salvation into our own hands which we all know is not a good idea.

Here are those truths as Max writes:

  • Love God more than you fear hell
  • Make major decisions in a cemetery
  • When no one is watching, live as if someone is
  • Succeed at home first
  • Don’t spend tomorrow’s money today
  • Pray twice as much as you fret
  • God has forgiven you; you’d be wise to do the same

I certainly don’t know if these are right or wrong but they seem like a good place to start.

Christmas – Giving Less Loving More

This year we have made a concerted effort to pull away from the commercialism of Christmas and spend some time giving back this holiday.  One of the ways we have done that is as simple as delivering a meal to a shut in.  Our church put together a mission on Thanksgiving day to deliver Meals on Wheels.  I did not know that, at least in our town, that they do not deliver to those that are shut in on this day.

We took our nine year old with us as a lesson in how much we have even though we have had a pretty tough year this year financially.  We are still healthy, we still have some work, we are able to get out, we have family and friends nearby that we are able to socialize with on a regular basis.  Life is good!  It was quite the eye opener for the daughter and for my wife and I was well, to get out and head into the part of town that we would not normally go and talk with people that we would normally not speak with.

Now that we are well into advent and on our way to Christmas we have been learning how to give less, spend less and love more.  If you are interested in what we are doing and how you can get in on the action too check out the adventconspiracy.org .

It pretty shocking that we as Americans spend so much on “stuff” that we won’t be able to even remember!  By spending just a fraction less on the stuff and investing in something that is real and will make a lasting impact on people we don’t even know….

…now that is Christmas!

What do you think?

Under Attack

Do you ever feel that you are under attack?  Under attack from your spouse or your job or that life is just out to get you sometimes?

There is no doubt that we all end up with some kind of attack on us at all times.  I think that is what we call life!  There are humans involved and we are still this side of eternity in an imperfect world so it should be expected.  It is not really what is thrown at us that matters but how we respond and deal with those situations. Is the way we respond glorifying to God or is it self-serving and spiteful.

A Shark Circling

The last 4 days have not been the most pleasant in my life both professionally and personally.  After a good week at work I arrive home on Friday afternoon, ready to enjoy a weekend with the wife, family and friends.  When I get to the house my wife informs me that I have packages that were left at the door for me.  Given that I had not ordered anything nor was I expecting anything I was quite curious…

Well curiousity quickly turned to anger and disappointment as I read the letters which are a regulatory complaint from a former client.  My first response was to be mad that my integrity was being attacked and then to disappointment that there are people giving bad information and half truths to this person and they are now attacking my livelihood.   Didn’t handle it to0 God glorifying at the start.  But I have had time to digest the situation, pray about it and hand it over to the Lord to guide me in my responses that will be right, just and appropriate given my faith in Him.

Death at the Doorstep

Just yesterday after church a group of friends went to eat at one of our favorite BBQ joints.  Unexpectedly another friend came in and we asked him to join us for lunch and visiting.  He was alone and would have been eating by himself so it was the right thing to do.  We had a great time talking, joking and discussing his brand new job at the school district.

He was so happy and thankful for his new job driving a bus at the new school district.  It gave him flexible hours, better pay and more guaranteed hours to supplement other retirement sources.  I am so glad that we got to visit and even commented so to my wife as we were driving home after the event.

This morning, before picking up any children (thank God), his bus was broad sided by an 18 wheeler and crushed into some other unknown object and killed trying to perform the job he had spoken about so highly the day before…what a shock.

Thanks to God

God puts people in our lives at the right place and the right time!  I am so thankful that I got to spend a final hour or so with Jerry, we had not been able to visit in depth for some time.  He brought joy and laughter to us all one last time before the Lord called him to glory and I give praise for that.  He had had much sorrow in his life in the past 5 years but always was a smiling face with a ready joke when you saw him.   He will be missed by the many that he touched.  I am sad today but give thanks to God for the time I spent with my friend and for his peace and strength that He gives us always to handle all of the attacks that come our way navigating this world.

God Loves the Truth!

If you are like me then you may always be dealing with the dilemma of the truth.  It is so easy in most situations to tell the little white lie or omit a portion of the conversation to avoid a conflict.  At work you take a pen, some paper clips, a highlighter….whatever and it ends up in the personal stash or you take it home and give it to the kids.  I am not talking deliberately telling a lie in most cases but those everyday things that we probably don’t even think about until after that fact, if at all. But it really doesn’t matter does it?  Whether you deliberately or inadvertantly commit the sin of lying…it’s still lying and its still a sin right?

God Has a Strict Honor Code

From Genesis to Revelation, the theme is the same.  God loves the truth and hates deceit!  I think there is only one reason for this is that it just goes totally against and is contrary to the character of God.

Do you ever wonder when you hear the story of Ananias and Sapphira if God still strikes people dead for lying?  I certainly hope that He does not in the literal sense or we could have  population control figured out pretty quickly.  But even though humans are not physically stuck dead I believe there is still death caused by these actions of deceit.

Dying Slowly

No one who is dishonest will live in my house; no liars will stay around me.”  PSALM 101:7

Slowly but surely with each mounting mistruth we have death in our relationships:

Death of a marriage, a conscience, a career…

…or lost intimacy, trust, credibility, peace and self-respect.

Bearing Witness

In order to be an effective witness for Jesus Christ we must be truthful with ourselves and with those around us.  Yes we all sin, yes we all lie, yes we all steal, yes we all have envy…we are human and that is the human condition.

But we must as believers and christians confess, repent and give it up totally to the Lord so that we can testify to His saving grace through death and resurrection for us in this world.  Don’t panic the Lord is in control and will provide for peace and abundance if we will just let go of the controls and let Him be our guide!

Who's in Charge Here?

In today’s heated political environment in the United States I am often left scratching my head wondering who’s in charge here.  Since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on this country, everything politically seems to be in the name of that horrendous act of barbarism and senseless death of innocent people.  But I really wonder if our leaders have the best interest of individual citizens at heart or just the desire to grab more and more of our freedoms in the name of safety and security.  I don’t really know but I do know that when the government starts providing everything we only need to look at history to see empires crumble.

Governed By Love

I believe in three things fundamentally:

  1. Love God
  2. Love Family
  3. Love Country

In that order to keep things in the proper perspective.  That is easy for me to write but much harder to exercise sometimes in light of the references above of people attacking our liberties and way of life from a heavy handed government.  As my pastor once said “I am glad God is in control”.

“In Christ we are set free by the blood of his death, and so we have forgiveness of sins.” EPHESIANS 1:7

God wants to emancipate His people…He wants to set them free, not to be slaves but sons and daughters.  Once we have been forgiven by the only one who can condemn us we are truly free.

Live Free

So live free of guilt, of worry and uncertainty of things with this world!  Stand up for your rights, that is our duty as human beings to preserve the sanctity and autonomy of each of us as individuals.  There should be no oppression of individuals of all races in the name of some government or some god.

So as I close here, I think I have answered my own question of whose in charge…

…it’s certainly not me, it is not some government (even though it feels that way at times) and it’s not any other human.   God is in charge and we should just listen to the instructions that He gives that are so hard to hear most of the time.

My prayer today is that we all find peace in knowing that God is in control.  Love Him with all your heart above all else!

Peace…

Oh and you may want to check out this discussion as well..

Situational Ethics

I was driving in the car the other day when the Huckabee Report came on the air.  And during that broadcast he used a term that I thought was very telling.  He was talking about a political power play that the Democrats in Massachusetts pulled a few years ago that they are now trying to change back now that the situation tilts in their favor.

In essence, the late Ted Kennedy spearheaded an effort to keep the then Republican governor from naming a replacement for John Kerry in Congress if he had won the presidential election.  It had resounding support from all of his Democrat buddies at the time.  But now the situation is different, Ted passed away a couple of weeks ago, leaving an empty seat that needs to be filled and the Dems now want the governor to have the ability to appoint someone.  It would now be in their favor since the governor is a Democrat and would most likely replace Mr. Kennedy with another one that would give them the majority they had in the Senate just a few weeks ago.

The Situational Ethics

If you listen to the stories when the law was changed there a few years ago all the politicians that supported it then saw no issue ethically or otherwise with changing it for the reasons given.  Now they say that it is totally wrong for that right not to be given and the political system is suffering waiting on a special election.

How convenient.   This is not a political commentary nor is it an endorsement of any political party.  It is to point out that situation ethics are easy to fall prey to. We all do it.

The Dilemma

You are in a public situation where maybe you could be ridiculed for your faith….do you stand up for it?

Maybe you are poking around in places on the internet that you shouldn’t be.  It won’t hurt anyone, really I am just looking at pictures or videos…

Pick the “Oh but it is OK…” that fits the situation you may find yourself in.  Because it is private does not make it right.  The situation should not drive the ethic but the other way around.

Be on the Side of God

“Everyone who is a child of God conquers the world.  And this is the victory that conquers the world – our faith.”  1 JOHN 5:4

You are truly a child of God and He will give you the strength to do what is right every time, if you give Him a chance.  But we as children will always misbehave from time to time and get into those situations where we will let the situation control our ethics instead of standing on our principles and our faith to get us to the other side.

My prayer for this day is that I (and you) can place total faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that He will be on our shoulder and in our hearts at all times…keeping us on the right side of the ethical questions that come to us every day.

God Makes Us Right Again

A few months ago some of our dear friends were transferred to California from Texas.  We were saddened to see them go, we had grown used to them being within a couple of hours from us and getting to know them again.  Prior to coming back to Texas they had been in Florida and in Connecticut pursuing the corporate success.  This move is one more step up that ladder that continues to lead to another rung every few years.

No Satisfaction

They continue to worry about jobs and money even though they have never had children, both have worked most of their adult lives and they have amassed a small fortune.  But there is still that fear that they don’t have enough or that their reputation may be tarnished by something that they have no control over in the corporate world. I feel for them because the ONLY satisfaction that is ever going to be permanent is filling their hearts with a love for Jesus that is stronger than the corporate pull.  I do not know if they will ever be able to get there.

Before they left they gave us a book by Max Lucado called “Grace for the Moment”.  If you don’t have it I recommend that you get it.  It is an easy read that is full of scripture and quick, to the point messages on each of those passages.

Today’s scripture is from Psalm 51:10:

Create me in a pure heart, God, and make my spirit right again.

We are all thirsty, not for fame or fortune, passion or romance.  If you are like me we have all been there and done that!  They are not satisfying and actually make the thirst worse.   I think we are all thirsty for righteousness…for a clean conscience.  We all crave a clean slate and a new start!

The Revelation

The cool thing is we can!  We can’t earn it, we can’t work it out.  It is ours for the taking so long as we turn ourselves over to the Lord.  Jesus came to this earth to die for our sins.   There is no way that we can ever earn the priviledge of eternal salvation but it is there out of grace.  Our Lord wants us to be in relationship with Him all the time just like any good father with his children. So call out to Him, not out of need but just because of who He is.

My Prayer

I pray that you will let God make you right again.  Throw away your human pride and put Him first in your life and glorify Him with all your words and actions.  He will come to you right where you are.

Peace.

We are Called

I have been mulling this site over for many months now and it is finally starting to take shape.  God has laid it on my heart to go outside the walls of the “church”, church the building that is, and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.  He is calling me to BE the church not just sit comfortably in the surroundings of other believers in a safe building.

The Mission and Calling

And so the Force of 12 is being born as we speak!  This site is being built on the belief that in the days of Jesus being on earth and knowing that his days were short he gathered 12 men to be His inner circle, to be his disciples to spread the gospel through the lands so that people could come to know His grace and enternal salvation.

So it is that I am joining other disciples to spread the good news of Jesus!  I welcome you to come along and spread the news of this site, contribute to its content and fight the good fight that is not of this world but eternity.

Don’t test God

Just yesterday I received a newsletter from a former pastor, friend and mentor that I want to pass along.  A cute story about an atheist college professor teaching his class.  He told them he was going to prove there was no God.  Raising his eyes upward, he challenged, “God, if you are real, knock me off this platform”.  Ten minutes later he taunted God again by saying…

…”still waiting”…

About that time a 240 pound linebacker rose and walked to the platform and leveled the professor with a body block.  The professor crumpled and asked, “Why did you do that?”  The linebacker said, “God was busy so He sent me!”

Of course, God is never too busy.  But He DOES send us…

  • …to preach the Word
  • …to provide hospitality
  • …to comfort the bereaved
  • …to befriend the lonely
  • …to teach and nuture the children
  • …to love one another
  • …to forgive one another
  • …to invite others to share the Christ we love and serve
  • …to be “steeple people” in the world

Thanks pastor Russell for that.  Its amazing how God always puts the answers right in front of us in His time.

Have a blessed day and I pray that this site will be a source of inspiration and resource for spreading the gospel of Jesus in a positive and powerful way so that He can change the world one heart at a time.
