This year we have made a concerted effort to pull away from the commercialism of Christmas and spend some time giving back this holiday. One of the ways we have done that is as simple as delivering a meal to a shut in. Our church put together a mission on Thanksgiving day to deliver Meals on Wheels. I did not know that, at least in our town, that they do not deliver to those that are shut in on this day.
We took our nine year old with us as a lesson in how much we have even though we have had a pretty tough year this year financially. We are still healthy, we still have some work, we are able to get out, we have family and friends nearby that we are able to socialize with on a regular basis. Life is good! It was quite the eye opener for the daughter and for my wife and I was well, to get out and head into the part of town that we would not normally go and talk with people that we would normally not speak with.
Now that we are well into advent and on our way to Christmas we have been learning how to give less, spend less and love more. If you are interested in what we are doing and how you can get in on the action too check out the adventconspiracy.org .
It pretty shocking that we as Americans spend so much on “stuff” that we won’t be able to even remember! By spending just a fraction less on the stuff and investing in something that is real and will make a lasting impact on people we don’t even know….
…now that is Christmas!
What do you think?
